Majja Menashun pudi koottu

Menashun pudi is chilli powder in the language Kannada, saaru/rasam powder is usually called as menashun pudi (actually chilli powder) in Karnataka... So this is actually saaru/rasam powder koottu

Ingredients:

Vegetable: Cabbage - Chopped
Toor dal - 1 tea cup
Saaru/Rasam powder - 2 tsp
Tamarind pulp - 1 tea cup
Asafoetida (Hing powder)- 2 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
Oil - 1 tsp
Curry leaves - few
Salt - as much as needed
Grated Coconut - 1 table spoons
Rice powder - 1 tsp

Preparation:

1. Boil toor dal along with water, 1 tsp of oil, turmeric powder and the chopped cabbage in a pressure cooker for 2 whistles or in a closed microwave oven in high for 30 minutes.
2. In a vessel, add the tamarind pulp, rasam powder and salt and let it boil in simmer for 10 minutes. The strong smell of chilli powder should go. Keep the vessel half closed to retain the flavour of rasam powder.
3. Add the boiled dal and cabbage into the boiling tamarind juice.
4. Mix the rice powder with some water and grated coconut and add it to the boiling koottu
5. In a separate pan, add oil and mustard. Let the mustard sputter and then add asafoetida and the curry leaves and remove from the pan.
6. After koottu starts boiling, add the oil with the mustard and remove from the heat.

Very yummy kootu, eaten along with rice.
